New beginnings

The North Boroughs Worship & Service Center is being led by a pair of newly commissioned officers—Lieutenants Kelly and Tylar Melfi. The Melfis, along with their two young sons, showed up in August to their first-ever appointment just a few weeks after graduating from the College for Officer Training (CFOT) and in the midst of COVID-19.

Five years ago, born–again Christians Frank and Shelley Dostie sold their Connecticut home and all their worldly possessions and bought a 29–foot recreational vehicle (RV). They decided to roam the countryside looking for places to volunteer with their two daughters, Bethany, 18, and Georgianna, 12, as well as their dog Koko. The RV, a 2000 Fleetwood Jamboree they found on Craigslist, is now their permanent home.

The social ministries coordinator at the Lynn, Mass., Corps, was finishing up another exhausting and emotionally challenging week by helping people find food in the wake of COVID–19. This stressful Friday had begun even before this single mother with three children had left the house. She was anxious to get home to her family, but when the phone rings, she answers.
