The COVID–19 “hotspot” known as Chelsea, Mass., continues to attract national attention as hungry people line up each day for food at the Chelsea/East Boston Salvation Army. However, this tells only part of the story. Separately from the corps, the Massachusetts Division’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team has partnered with the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), the city of Chelsea, and the National Guard to provide almost 5,000 emergency food boxes to the troubled city.

Masking their disappointment

he girls’ robotics team at Horizon Science Academy Columbus High School in Ohio was disappointed last month when COVID–19 canceled the state competitions. But while some may have moped, two teachers at the charter school were determined to turn the bad break into something positive and help community groups such as The Salvation Army. The teachers used materials left over from the robotics program and the school’s 3D printers to design plastic masks, which have been in high demand since the outbreak.

The small town of Bloomsburg, Pa., is blessed with plenty of food banks that have kept local residents fed during the COVID–19 outbreak. However, the area’s children have grown restless during the quarantine. Michael Schmid, the treasurer and a volunteer at the Bloomsburg Salvation Army Service Center, said he had heard complaints from parents that their children were “driving us nuts” being at home all the time.

When there’s no school, there’s also no after school. That didn’t sit well with the folks who run The Salvation Army’s Roller Enrichment Academy (REA) after–school program at Steelton Elementary near Harrisburg, Pa. REA is a federally funded, 21st Century Community Learning Center program.
