Gaining and Keeping Trust

By |2024-10-21T14:29:20-04:00October 2nd, 2024|

One of the main expectations any charitable organization must live up to is transparency—to be an “open book” to the public to ensure that it’s worthy of being trusted. When that organization is also a religious movement modeled after the gospel of Jesus Christ, gaining and keeping the public’s trust becomes even more important.

He Seeks Us

In the Gospel of Mark, the Lord encounters a man possessed by a legion of demons. The story left me with mixed emotions. This man’s inability to be free of such spirits filled me with sadness and regret.

What to Do with Feelings

By |2024-07-03T13:18:01-04:00July 3rd, 2024|

A familiar feeling comes over me as I remember the sounds of a tinkling piano, the sight of sneakers and a cozy cardigan, and the familiar warm face of a friend singing, “What do you do with the mad that you feel?” My friendly neighbor on the TV, Mister Rogers, talks about how toys don’t have feelings, but people do.

Goodbye Chewie

By |2024-05-21T07:11:41-04:00May 21st, 2024|

At the beginning of 2023, my family had to say goodbye to our beloved dog, Chewie. We were filled with sadness and tears but also relief that she would be free of her painful illness. She had been suffering from oral cancer, and we knew the right thing to do was to end her suffering. But it was impossible to envision life without Chewie. She was more than just a dog—she was our four-legged family member.

Forgive

By |2024-05-21T07:11:27-04:00May 16th, 2024|

Jesus answers Peter’s question about the limits of forgiveness in the book of Matthew by telling a parable. The parable that Jesus tells makes it clear that the Kingdom of Heaven is a Kingdom of Forgiveness. It is a kingdom where forgiveness is free, plentiful, and undeserved. It is also a kingdom where there is little tolerance for unforgiveness.

Crises that Rocked the Army

By |2024-06-26T11:17:10-04:00May 15th, 2024|

The Salvation Army has endured through storms, threats, and trials and has been described as the most effective organization in the United States. With such an accolade, it would be easy to think of the Army as a big ship at sea, easily traversing the waves, constant and sure of its direction, but that was not always so.

Leading Ladies

By |2024-07-03T13:29:40-04:00March 13th, 2024|

To say that women have played a vital role in the history of the Church is the understatement of the millennia. But in the Western evangelical tradition of which The Salvation Army is part, women in many denominations are seemingly relegated to the sidelines of ministry. They are welcomed to serve, they are welcomed to teach children, they are welcomed to feed others—yet they are sadly unwelcomed in the pulpit.

The Asbury Outpouring, One Year Later

By |2024-07-03T16:16:38-04:00January 11th, 2024|

For more than two weeks last February, the Asbury University campus was transformed—and the global effects of the event are still evident. In February of 2023, a small group of praying students expanded to include an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 visitors from all over the United States and nearly 40 countries. They came to witness what is known among Christians as an outpouring—the moving of the Holy Spirit.
