The Salvation Army is a church and its message is based on the Bible. The churches, which can be found in nearly every community in the United States, are called “corps.” A corps is typically led by a married couple who are both ordained pastors and referred to as “officers.” There are almost 27,000 of these officers around the world.
Just two weeks before Sept. 11, 2001, our family had been vacationing in downtown Manhattan. We never imagined what would eventually take place right where we stood.

On April 15, Mark Sabota watched helplessly as the fire department hosed down the flames at the Olyphant, Pa., house where he had been living for the past year. He felt overwhelmed and lost. He and the four other people living in the house were now homeless. All of the residents left the burning building shoeless and with just the clothes on their backs.
