‘Creation’ Concert

Recently, the New York Staff Band of The Salvation Army used music to express the glory of God in a concert called “Creation” by Dorothy Gates, then the band’s composer in residence. The band, now more than 145 years in existence, is among the finest Christian band in performance.

Since their humble beginnings in 1971, Pastor Jim and Carol Cymbala have served as spiritual leaders of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, which is today an historic 3,300–seat, non–denominational megachurch in Brooklyn, N.Y. It is world renowned for its melodic Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, which has received six Grammy Awards so far. Carol Cymbala is director of the multi–ethnic, multiracial chorale.

In the 1920s, the world enjoyed a growing prosperity, levity, and optimism. In the United States, the era became known as the “Roaring Twenties.” The Salvation Army worldwide also grew exponentially during that time. Evangeline Booth, who was a daughter of William Booth, founder of the Army, was also its charismatic leader in the U.S. Her brother, Bramwell, based in London, served as the Army’s international leader.
